MPPM in the parade for Peace in Lisbon

Many hundreds of people marched yesterday, Saturday, in downtown Lisbon, in the last of the series of street actions that, on the initiative of the CPPC, and to which the MPPM and another four dozen organizations have joined, took place in Porto, Coimbra, Faro, Funchal and now in Lisbon, to demand "Stop the War! Give Peace a Chance!

Starting from Largo de Camões, the demonstration went down Chiado until Praça do Município, where Sebastião Antunes performed, preceding the interventions of José Pinho, from Projecto Ruído, Isabel Camarinha, from CGTP-IN, and Ilda Figueiredo, from CPPC.

Fernando Lopes Jorge, who made the presentations, recalled the Appeal to participate in this public act:

It is necessary to continue to defend peace by mobilizing and gathering all the wills committed to this cause full of topicality and importance.

After having taken to the streets in several cities in the country in March, June and October 2022 and again in February 2023, demanding peace throughout the world, we see that the situation in several countries proves the urgency and the need to open and make concrete paths towards peace.

There are more and more voices that unite around the defence of policies of peace, sovereignty, solidarity, cooperation and friendship between all peoples, and these voices are sounding louder and louder. It is necessary to amplify them and affirm that we must stop the war and give peace a chance!

That is why, in June, we are back on the streets. We call on all those who defend and do not give up peace to join us.

It is urgent:

To stop confrontation and war, whether in Palestine, Western Sahara, Syria, Yemen, Sudan or Ukraine, with the tragic consequences and serious dangers they entail;

To halt the escalation of warmongering in Europe, but also in other parts of the world, particularly in the Asia-Pacific region, in disrespect of peoples' rights to peace, development and sovereignty

To put an end to the sanctions that are affecting the living conditions of workers and populations, including in the countries of the European Union, while the armaments, energy, food and distribution multinationals are amassing fabulous profits;

To make room for diplomacy and political conflict resolution, rejecting the threat of the use of force in international relations, so that peace and cooperation take precedence over policies of interference, militarism and war;

To respect for the principles of the United Nations Charter and the Final Act of the Helsinki Conference, as a way to ensure peoples' rights, peace, security and cooperation;

That the Portuguese Government does not contribute to worsening conflict and militarism and that it abides by the principles of the Constitution of the Portuguese Republic - born on 25 April 1974, which is completing 50 years - such as the right to self-determination for peoples, non-interference in the internal affairs of other States, the peaceful resolution of international conflicts, the dissolution of political-military blocs and general, simultaneous and controlled disarmament;

To promote solidarity and friendship among all peoples and to defend their right to peace, an essential condition for development, justice and social progress, for the well-being of all mankind.

We therefore call upon all supporters of peace to make their voices heard and to participate in the actions that will take place in various cities.
