MPPM condemns Israeli repression and salutes the unity in the struggle of the Palestinian people

The MPPM - Movement for the Rights of the Palestinian People and for Peace in the Middle East - denounces and condemns the brutal escalation of violence by the Israeli occupier on the Palestinian people, in the West Bank and in East Jerusalem, and at the same time salutes the demonstrations of unity, expressed both in the popular resistance in occupied Palestine and in the coming together of political forces recently gathered in Algeria.

Israeli repression in the occupied Palestinian territories is assuming enormously serious proportions, which must be brought to an end without delay. Palestinian assassinations by Israeli repressive forces are almost daily, as are acts of violence carried out by settlers throughout the West Bank.

UN special envoy to the Middle East, Tor Wennesland, said at the recent Security Council special debate on Palestine that 2022 is shaping up to be the deadliest year for West Bank Palestinians since the UN began compiling data in 2005. Last month alone, Israeli security forces killed 32 Palestinians, including six children, and injured 311. Since the beginning of the year, more than 125 Palestinians have been killed by the occupiers.

The Chief of Staff of the Israeli armed forces confirmed in a recent speech that "it has been waging war in the West Bank, over the past seven months" and revealed that since March alone, more than 1500 Palestinians have been arrested.

For over three weeks, the city of Nablus and its 170,000 inhabitants have been living under siege by the Israeli occupier, a reality faced by other towns in the West Bank and that the Gaza Strip has known for 15 years.

The MPPM condemns the intolerable escalation of repression and violence by the Israeli occupier, demanding its immediate end. It demands that the Portuguese government break its usual silence when it comes to denouncing Israel's crimes and demands, from the United Nations, a firm and unequivocal position condemning Israeli violence.

At the same time, the MPPM salutes the growing unity of the Palestinian people, expressed in the increasing popular resistance in the towns and cities under occupation. This unity is also reflected in the Summit of 14 Palestinian political forces held on 13 October, in Algeria, and in the Joint Declaration approved there, the implementation of which will represent an important event.

The unity of the Palestinian people in fighting for their inalienable rights is a decisive factor in unblocking the absence, for several years, of any political process for resolving the Palestinian question.

It is urgent to put an end to the hypocrisy, the promises never kept, the connivance with Israel and its denial of the rights of the Palestinian people, enshrined in numerous UN Resolutions. The people of Palestine demand justice. And the people of the world are showing growing solidarity with this demand.

The MPPM calls for the reinforcement, in our country, of the solidarity with the struggle of the Palestinian people. In this sense, it appeals to the participation in the initiatives that it will promote, during the month of November, in the scope of the Journeys of Solidarity with Palestine, around the International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People - November 29th - and whose programme will be divulged soon.
